Specialist High Skills Majors

Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) programs help students put a laser-like focus on their learning.

SHSMs are Ministry approved specialized programs that allow students to concentrate their education on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements for their high school diploma. Students gain specific skills and knowledge relevant to the career they are interested in pursuing.

Earning a SHSM also helps students make a smooth and successful transition from high school to college, university or the workplace.

Currently, the DSBN offers 40 Specialist High Skills Majors programs in 10 different economic sectors:

Agriculture
Arts and Culture
Business
Construction
Energy
Hospitality and Tourism
Horticulture
Information and Communication Technology
Manufacturing
Transportation

Who are they for?

Students in Grades 11 and 12 who are heading for an apprenticeship, training, college, university or the workplace.

What are the benefits?

Students will gain important skills on the job with actual employers, at skills training centres and at school. Students will also earn valuable industry certifications, including first aid and CPR.
