DSBN's Young Einsteins Recognized

Budding young scientists at the District School Board of Niagara are being recognized for their research, hard work and innovative approaches to questions of science. Recently, students wrapped up one of their most successful showings at the Niagara Regional Science and Engineering Fair which was held in March.

In particular, six DSBN students will move on to represent the region as part of Team Niagara at the Canada-Wide Science Fair held in Toronto from May 14-21. Travelling to Toronto will be:

  • Will Preston and Wyatt Hoadley, Vineland Public School
  • Shane Hickman, Pelham Centre Public School
  • Joan Lopez, Sir Winston Churchill
  • Varsha Jayasankar, Sir Winston Churchill
  • Gaelle Grouz, Sir Winston Churchill

Additionally, Lexie Penny from Grimsby Secondary School will soon be packing her bags to represent the DSBN as part of Team Canada at the International Science Fair held in Los Angeles, California from May 8 -13. Lexie’s project “Niagara Region’s Environmental Impact on Water Quality of Lake Ontario,” was recognized with the University of Guelph Plant Science Award, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Award, the Hatch Award, United States Army Award and a Silver Medal in the Intermediate Division.

DSBN Science and Environmental Education Consultant Sean Hanna says students’ participation in these events allows them to “demonstrate their keen interest and innovative approach to complex scientific issues. We congratulate them all for their hard work, careful research and professional presentations.”
