Upwards and Onwards for DSBN Tech Students  

Three students from the District School Board of Niagara will be heading to la belle province to showcase their talents on the national stage at the annual Skills Canada Competitions. Students earned their tickets to Quebec City by winning gold medals at the 2011 Ontario Technological Skills Competition held in Waterloo on May 2 and 3.

Stamford Collegiate’s Niki Harris won gold for her performance in the hairstyling challenge, Gurtej Multani from E.L. Crossley struck gold in electrical wiring, and Port Colborne High’s Daniel Dressel earned his golden ticket in the welding challenge.

In addition to the secondary level medal winners, DSBN elementary students can also be very proud of their performance. The 2D Animation Team from Vineland Public School won gold at the provincial competitions, while students from McKay Public School in Port Colborne won silver at the Lego Robotics competition. Only students from the secondary level challenges are eligible to move on to the national competitions.

“Students have done a great deal of work to get to this level and deserve to be congratulated for both their skill and determination,” says Mike Doyle, DSBN Skills Development Coordinator.

In total, the DSBN sent 46 Board-level champions to compete at the provincials. The OTSC is the single largest provincial Technological Skills Competition held in Canada hosting 1800 competitors with many competitions having up to 40 competitors representing school boards from across the province.
