DSBN Students to Compete in Hunger Games Challenges
In the post-apocalyptic world depicted in Suzanne Collins’ novel “The Hunger Games”, the ruling government forces young people to compete against each other in a battle for survival. At the District School Board of Niagara, students taking part in challenges based on “The Hunger Games” will be working cooperatively to complete a number of different tasks and improve their literacy skills. Through the week of November 14-18, students will be engaged in a broad range of different outdoor activities based on the novel at the Woodend Conservation Area.
The event involves students from schools across the DSBN. In the challenges, students will be asked to build shelters from fallen logs, trees and branches, navigate the paths of the conservation area using orienteering skills and participate in interactive, cooperative novelty sports and activities.
Literacy Support Teacher Krista Kiemele says the games “provide students with an engaging opportunity to make connections to the novel and extend their understanding of the events that unfold throughout the plot through active participation.”
Each day is scheduled to begin at approximately 10:00 a.m. and will conclude at 2:00 p.m. Woodend Conservation area is located near Niagara College’s Glendale Campus on Taylor Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
