 Groundswell of Support Building for Woodend 

Efforts to develop Woodend – The Living Campus are taking on a life of their own.

At the Woodend Gala held on February 2, DSBN Director of Education Warren Hoshizaki announced that the Walker family was contributing $500,000 to help create an environmentally sustainable legacy for generations of students in Niagara. The money represents the single largest gift to the school board in its history.

“This is significant,” said Hoshizaki. “The Walker family has a proud tradition of supporting our local community and we are especially pleased to receive their support on this project which will benefit students for many years to come.”

Woodend – The Living Campus represents a unique opportunity to create a progressive, 21st century ecological learning environment for both the community and students at the DSBN. The project will completely reinvigorate the outdoor education centre currently sitting atop the Niagara escarpment. The development will include a school house consisting of two classrooms, a gathering place where students will explore sustainable building practices and renewable energy sources, and an outdoor classroom for students to become immersed in the beauty of the natural landscape.

Once completed, the revitalized campus will empower students, through exploration and discovery, to develop a connection to the earth and understand their responsibility for and impact on it. The Living Campus will serve students from Kindergarten through Grade 12.

The donation brings the total amount raised to over one million dollars.
