Community Comes Together at Crossroads
On Thursday, February 9, students, staff, DSBN trustees and Niagara-on-the-Lake residents came together to celebrate Crossroads’ significance as a true community hub when the school celebrated its official grand opening.
“The sense of community at Crossroads is so important,” said Principal Marian Reimer-Friesen. “With Crossroads, we were able to bring together the Colonel John Butler and Virgil Public School communities. We are so proud of how the students have made the transition and embraced the opportunities to learn and grow together in a state-of-the-art facility.”
The significance of the Crossroads site dates back to the early 1800’s when the intersection between Black Swamp Road (now known as Hwy 55) and Four Mile Creek road became a popular stopping point for weary travelers. Taking a break at the crossroads gave people an opportunity to eat, drink, rest and socialize. “The Virgil community truly grew up around the crossroads and we are excited to see it continue as an important neighbourhood landmark,” said Reimer-Friesen.
The theme of the opening ceremony was “better together”, which signifies the importance of community in creating a positive school culture and innovative learning environment. During the ceremony all classes contributed items to a time capsule which will be placed inside one of the columns at the front of the school for the next 50 years.
Crossroads Public School opened its doors to 430 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in September, 2011. The state-of-the-art facility includes 22 classrooms and the latest in learning technologies and environmental features. With a large gymnasium, spacious stage, change rooms and washrooms, Crossroads’ facilities are ideal for school and community sports, assemblies and recreational activities.
