Canadian Idol Winner to Help Eden Students

Eden students are enlisting some star power in their efforts to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa. On Thursday, February 23, 2007 Canadian Idol winner Brian Melo will be performing a benefit concert in support of the school’s Spread the Net campaign. The show, which will be for students at the Lake Street school, will cap off the student led campaign that began in September, 2011.
“Malaria is one of the biggest global health problems facing young people in developing nations,” says student council member Isaac Hunter. “Over the past six months, students have raised over $7,000 to purchase and distribute insecticide-treated bed nets to help protect vulnerable children. We’re very proud of how students have gotten behind this issue and we’re looking forward to wrapping up the campaign in grand fashion next week.”
Fellow student council member Michael Emmanuel says the students are thrilled to have Brian Melo support this worthy cause. “Brian is well known for his community work, and we really appreciate that he’s donating his time and efforts to help save lives in Africa.”
Next Thursday’s concert will also showcase some of the school’s home grown talent. Eden graduate Nathaniel Rustenberg will be joining Brian Melo’s band on drums. The show will also feature Eclectic Tendencies, a student vocal group, as well as a student dance duo.
“Our students are demonstrating real leadership and making a positive impact on children’s lives across the globe. This initiative is a wonderful example of the strong character students develop at Eden,” says Principal Ruth Hernder.
