Giving Old Electronics a New Lease on Life

Beginning Friday, Westmount Public School in Thorold will take part in Think Recycle’s Earth Day challenge by hosting a free electronic waste collection event. From April 20 – 27, community members and local businesses can drop off their unwanted electronics between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Westmount is located at 73 Ann Street West in Thorold.

Acceptable materials include: cell phones, laptops/tablets, computers, monitors, computer peripherals, digital cameras, iPods, televisions, radios, telephones, fax machines, speakers, copiers, scanners, pagers, turntables, printers, stereo equipment and more. All products are sent directly to Greentec’s Cambridge facility for processing.

“80% of households in Ontario have at least one electronic product that is obsolete or not being used. Most people simply don’t know how to properly dispose of them,” says Tony Perrotta, CEO of Greentec. “This electronic waste collection event is an easy, safe and responsible way for you to dispose of your unwanted electronics, while helping to protect the environment and give back to your local community.”

Westmount Public School will earn money for every qualifying item dropped off during the collection. Principal Mary Zwolak says the money raised will go towards supporting eco-initiatives at Westmount and towards a donation to support the Walker Living Campus at Woodend.

“From waste reduction to power conservation, students are really behind this movement towards sustainability,” says Zwolak. “They are also very eager to support the Woodend development so other students in Niagara will have an opportunity to develop a connection to and appreciation for our environment.”

Once completed, The Walker Living Campus will be a progressive, 21st century ecological learning environment for both the community and students at the DSBN. It will completely reinvigorate the outdoor education centre currently sitting atop the Niagara escarpment. For more information on the Walker Living Campus at Woodend, please click here.
