Happy Trails! Ride, Hike, Run for Woodend is Fast Approaching

On Sunday, May 6, support for the Walker Living Campus will spill out onto the trails of Niagara for the second annual “Ride, Hike, Run for Woodend.” The event features something for everyone, no matter their level of participation.

For the true adventurer, there will be a 30 kilometre (km) bike ride which begins in Niagara-on-the-Lake and ends at Woodend. There will also be a shorter, 5 km route for those that wish to ride, run or hike and a 1.5 km family hike through the beautiful trails of Woodend. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and over 250 people have already registered to take part. Registration is still available online and will also be accepted on the day of.

Regardless of the trail people choose, all roads will lead to Woodend where there will be a celebratory BBQ and entertainment for all. Popular local band, “Running with Scissors” and a special musical guest from Toronto will be playing for the crowd’s enjoyment.

“The 30 kilometre bike ride from Niagara-on-the-Lake up the escarpment was incredible” says Josh Fast, who took part in last year’s event. “It was a great ride and I was able to raise money for a worthy project.”

All funds raised will support the transformation of the existing DSBN Outdoor Environmental Centre into the Walker Living Campus at Woodend, an environment that will empower students through exploration and discovery to develop a connection to the earth and understand their responsibility and impact on it. The Walker Living Campus will be a progressive ecological learning environment for the over 38,000 students of DSBN and the community.

“Before we can ask children to become champions for the environment, they must understand the importance of the issue and how the environment relates to our own health and well-being,” says Kevin Graham, DSBN Special Initiatives Facilitator. “This is what the Walker Living Campus is all about.”

The 30 km ride will depart School Support Services at 1875 Niagara Stone Road in NOTL; the 5 km event will begin at Club Italia at 2525 Montrose Road in Niagara Falls and the 1.5 km family hike will take place at Woodend, 9653 Warner Road in NOTL. All events begin at 10 a.m.
