Port Colborne High School Showcases Technology Programs

Businesses south of the border will be making the trip north to visit Port Colborne High School on Thursday, May 31, to see the school’s highly successful co-op and Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) programs. Representatives from the Hebeler Corporation, the Charter School for Applied Technology and the Dream It, Do It Western New York initiative will all be making the trip to Port Colborne.

The Hebeler Corporation is a member of the Buffalo-Niagara Manufacturing Alliance and has been working with its partners to promote the manufacturing sector and boost enrolments in related programs to meet the workforce demands of the industry. Those touring PCHS on Thursday are particularly interested in the programs that are supporting student success in Ontario, such as OYAP (Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program), SHSM and cooperative education. 

The Hebeler Corporation is the parent company of J. Oskam Steel Fabricators in Port Colborne, which has partnered with the school to support students many times over the years.

The District School Board of Niagara proudly offers 40 different Specialist High Skills Majors programs in ten different economic sectors. SHSMs allow students to concentrate their education on the career of their choice, while earning credits towards their high school diploma. In these programs, students gain important skills on the job with actual employers, at skills training centres and at school. Students also earn valuable industry certifications, including first aid and CPR.
