History Comes Alive as DSBN Students Showcase Work at Provincial Fair

Four young historians from the District School Board of Niagara will join their counterparts from across the province at the Ontario Provincial Heritage Fair being held in Toronto on Monday, June 11. The students all earned their invites to the provincial event by earning honours at the DSBN Heritage Fair held on April 30 in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Heritage Fairs program encourages students to explore Canadian history in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Students use the medium of their choice to tell stories about Canadian heroes, legends, milestones and achievements.

“Canada is a proud country with a rich history and our students have chosen to tell some very rich and compelling stories,” says Heather Corey, DSBN Consultant for Canadian and World Studies. “Only 70 students in Grades 4 – 10 are invited to participate in the provincial fair, so our student should be very proud of all they have accomplished.”

Invited to this year’s provincial fair are:

Ethan Chase, Grade 5, Westdale Public School, St. Catharines

Ethan’s project explores the life of famous Canadian artist A.Y. Jackson.

Frank Elia, Grade 8, Jordan Public School

The Toronto Raptors are now Canada’s only NBA franchise. Frank’s project examines the team’s history and its impact on the Canadian professional sports landscape.

Janeya Lyew, Grade 6, Applewood Public School, St. Catharines

Janeya’s research focuses on the contributions of Aboriginals during the War of 1812. She says Aboriginal support prevented the loss of Upper Canada to American expansion.

Olivia Noun, Grade 6, Applewood Public School, St. Catharines

Many children across the globe don’t have the opportunity to go to school, and many are forced to work in deplorable conditions. Olivia’s project documents the work of Free the Children, which began as an initiative of Craig Kielburger and his friends and has grown into the #1 network of children helping children.

The Provincial Fair will be hosted at the William Doo Auditorium at the University of Toronto, located at 45 Willcocks Street. The Fair will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario will be the guest speaker at the opening ceremony, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. In a news release from the Ontario Heritage Fairs Association, the Lieutenant Governor said “The outstanding work of these students, who have already excelled at the ‘regionals’ in their respective communities, is to be commended going above and beyond in their efforts to keep Canadian history vital and relevant.”
