EA Honoured for Dedication to Student Success
Years after they leave school, students often fondly recall the teacher or school staff member who made the greatest impact on their lives. The one who made them believe they could achieve great things, even when they had doubts. For many students at Briardale Public School, that person will be Sandra Duff.
At the Board meeting on Monday, June 25, the District School Board of Niagara and CUPE Local 4156 presented Duff with the prestigious Joan Crowe Award. The award is given annually to an Educational Assistant (EA) or Child Care Worker at the DSBN who demonstrates outstanding commitment to their profession and the students they serve.
In nominating her for the award, Sandra’s colleagues noted that she always has a “positive attitude”, and that “her joy at seeing kids succeed is wonderfully contagious.” Her colleagues also credited her for being very proactive and being willing to “do whatever it takes” to support students. Calling her an expert in her profession, Sandra’s colleagues also appreciated her dedication to lifelong learning, as she continuously works to upgrade her skills and knowledge in order to help her students succeed.
“Sandra is a true leader in her field,” said Frank Ventresca, President, CUPE local 4156. “She is committed to serving students and is an inspiration to her colleagues. We feel Sandra is a very deserving recipient of this year’s Joan Crowe award.”
Joan Crowe started as the first Educational Assistant with the former Niagara South Board of Education in 1974. Throughout her career she supported students with her kind, generous and gentle approach. Joan retired from the Board in June 2001 and passed away after a courageous battle with cancer in February of 2002.
