Sears Drama Festival Shows RCBHS Some Love
Students and staff at Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School (RCBHS) are certainly feeling the love after being invited to perform at the provincial showcase of the Sears Drama Festival. This is only the second time in the past eight years that a DSBN school has been asked to perform at the provincial showcase. The other invite was also extended to RCBHS in 2010.
RCBHS students earned their trip to the provincials on the strength of their play “Big Love” by Charles L. Mee. It is a modern take of Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants”, about fifty brides who run away to avoid having to marry their fifty cousins. Students performed the play at the DSBN festival and the regional festival in Hamilton.
At the regional’s, RCBHS was took home the award for Outstanding Production as well as an Award of Excellence for Choral Ensemble. Also joining RCBHS at the regional festival were Governor Simcoe Secondary and St. Catharines Collegiate. Simcoe wowed the audience with its production of "Property Rights", while Collegiate impressed with its production of "Broken".
DSBN Arts Consultant Gerda Klassen congratulated all three schools, their students and teachers for their outstanding accomplishments. “Our Board is home to so many talented students and teachers. It was a true pleasure to witness the level of dedication and expertise of all involved,” said Klassen.
The provincial showcase will take place at Sir John A. MacDonald Secondary School in Hamilton from May 8 – 11. Shows begin at 7:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door. Adult tickets are $10, while students can see the performances for $8.
