Students on Track for Success at DSBN Special Olympics

Sports play an important role in many young people’s lives. They help children to develop their skills, improve health and increase their self-confidence. On Wednesday, June 12, DSBN students with special needs will come together to display their talents and celebrate success at the annual DSBN Special Olympics.

This invitational event will take place at the Niagara Olympic Club behind West Park Secondary School in St. Catharines between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Over 400 elementary and secondary athletes are expected to take part in different events including long jump, softball throw and team relay races with each student attempting to obtain a personal best.

“This event is definitely one of the biggest highlights of the year for students,” said Kelly Pisek, Assistant Superintendent of Special Education. “It is an inclusive event that offers students an opportunity to have fun with their classmates and experience success in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.”

“It is also important to mention the incredible amount of support we receive; over 100 students and teachers will volunteer their time to celebrate our students’ unique strengths and abilities,” added Pisek. Volunteers will be readily visible as they will be wearing Special Olympics t-shirts created by students across the DSBN.

This year, six DSBN students will be moving on to take part in the Special Olympics Provincial games to be held in Toronto in July.
