DSBN Clears the Air Regarding NOTL Proposal

The District School Board of Niagara was surprised to learn of a proposal by St.Catharines/Niagara-on-the-Lake Trustee Jonathan Fast to repurpose the current School Support Services site in NOTL.

Citing the need to create clarity around the issue, Kevin Maves, Chair of the DSBN Board of Trustees, said the proposal suggested by Jonathan Fast, “Has never been raised or discussed with the DSBN Board of Trustees or senior administration. The proposal does not reflect the official position of the DSBN. The responsibility of trustees is to support the education of students.”

DSBN Trustees have approved the move of School Support Services staff to sites in St. Catharines; however, no decisions have been made regarding the current building on Niagara Stone Road. “Trustees have not declared the site surplus to the Board’s needs, so any proposal for use of the property is entirely premature. Should Trustees declare the property surplus, the Town would have the opportunity to purchase the property at fair market value,” added Maves.

The District School Board of Niagara is governed by a Board of 11 democratically elected Trustees. Policy, financial and property decisions are decided by a majority vote of the Board. Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month and agendas are available online at www.dsbn.org.
