Cutting Down Cancer by Cutting Off Hair  

She’s never had a haircut, or even a trim.

On Thursday, October 17, Stamford Collegiate’s own “modern-day Rapunzel” will put all that hair to good use. That morning, Grade 11 student Masa Song will chop off over four feet of hair to support cancer research.

Song will have her first haircut in front of the entire student body during Thursday morning’s assembly to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. The shorn hair will be donated to Wigs for Kids.

After having grown her hair for over 16 years, Masa made the decision to cut off her flowing locks, which now reach the ground, in honour of her late mother. Masa lost her mother to lung cancer when she was just 12 years old. Stamford Principal Ann Harrison says that Masa’s story is a “major inspiration for everyone at the school.”

The assembly will also feature performances by the school band and students in the school’s drama department.
