Environment Front and Centre at DSBN Elementary Eco-Summit
On Thursday, October 24, elementary students from across the District School Board of Niagara will be sharing ideas and learning about all they can do to support a greener, healthier environment at the fourth annual DSBN Eco Summit. The event will bring together students in Grade 4 through 8 for a day of environmentally themed events at School Support Services in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The theme of the event is “Celebrating all we ‘R’ doing – beyond the three R’s.” Participating students will participate in sessions on the four pillars of Ontario EcoSchools: Waste Minimization, Energy Conservation, School Yard Greening and Ecological Literacy. Presenters will include staff from the Niagara Region, Sassafras Farms and the DSBN Employee Energy Conservation Committee. In one of the group activities taking place, students will be “upcycling” old t-shirts into reusable bags.
“By now, we are all familiar with the popular environmental saying ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’. What people may be surprised to learn is that students and schools are taking part in many activities that go beyond the three R’s and explore sustainability in greater depth. Thursday’s Eco Summit will be an excellent way to support those initiatives,” said Nancy Bridgeman, DSBN Consultant for Science and Environmental Education.
Over 120 students are expected to take part in Thursday’s event.
