Students Showcase Business Acumen

One hundred students from high schools across the DSBN will be sitting down at their corporate boardroom in Niagara-on-the-Lake next week to hammer out solutions to problems that have plagued businesses over the years. The third annual DSBN DECA Competition will be held at School Support Services on Niagara Stone Road on November 27, from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

The competition involves a 25 question multiple choice test and a team case study presentation. Competing in teams of two, students will be presented with a business scenario that they have to analyze and develop a solution for. Categories include finance, marketing, sports and entertainment marketing, travel and tourism and hospitality. Students will be evaluated on their analysis, plan and presentation.

Students will also have the opportunity to meet business professionals and speak with them about their chosen fields and expertise. “We’re very pleased to have the support of our business partners. Their expertise will help students understand the realities of the workplace and the skills that employers look for,” said Karen Chcoski, E.L. Crossley Secondary School teacher.

“This event will provide students with an opportunity to develop their leadership, teamwork and communication skills, while at the same time learning about the opportunities within DECA Canada and DECA International,” said Connie Dove, DSBN Business Studies Subject Council Chair.

DECA is a not-for-profit organization created to enhance the business education of high school students in Canada. For more information, please visit the DECA website at www.deca.ca.
