Canadian History Comes to Life at 2014 Heritage Fair
Students
at the District School Board of Niagara will be taking a look back through time
next week at the annual DSBN Heritage Fair being held at Old Fort Erie from May
5-6.
Over 60 student
projects celebrating the many different aspects of Canadian history will be on
display. Students from Grades four to eight from across Niagara competed at
school level fairs to qualify for the regional fair.
The
Heritage Fairs program encourages students to explore Canadian history in a hands-on
learning environment. Students use the medium of their choice to tell stories
about Canadian heroes, legends, milestones and achievements. This year’s Fair
will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Old Fort Erie.
In
addition to the Fair, students will immerse themselves in the history of Old
Fort Erie by visiting the interactive display inside the museum, watching a
film about the fort and having a special one hour guided tour of the fort.
“Niagara is a region with a rich history and
there are many stories just waiting to be told,” says Blair Janzen, DSBN Curriculum
Consultant. “Students have worked hard to prepare these projects and uncover
details of some of the most gripping events in local and national history. Some
students have also chosen to look at the traditions and historical significance
within their own families.”
Janzen
adds that participating in the Heritage Fairs program is an excellent way for
students to explore Canadian history and develop effective research skills.
“Preparing and presenting these projects also allows students to develop
essential oral, written and visual literacy skills,” says Janzen.
From
the Board wide Fair, three students will be selected to present at the
provincial event taking place in Toronto from June 14-15.
