Skilled Trades Take Centre Stage at Conference for Young Women

On Tuesday, October 28 the District School Board of Niagara will host the second annual “Your Future Starts Now” skilled trades and technologies conference for young women in grades 9-12. This event gives young women from public high schools across the region the opportunity to meet, interact and learn from female mentors training and working in apprenticeship skilled trades and technologies fields.

Over 200 young women are expected to attend the event. They will have the opportunity to learn from over 25 mentors representing different areas of the skilled trades. “Canada is facing a shortage of skilled trades workers. However, women are drastically underrepresented in these fields,” said Carrie Thwaites, DSBN Experiential Learning Coordinator.

“It’s important for young women to be exposed to the great career options available to them in the Construction, Technology, Manufacturing, Services, Transportation and Construction sectors. This event provides our female high school students with information and mentorship to empower them to start exploring skilled trades and technologies through our DSBN Technology, Cooperative Education, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program, and Specialist High Skills Major programs,” added Thwaites.

The event is funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities through the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program.
