Local Educator Takes Reins at Greater Fort Erie Secondary
The
first DSBN secondary school to be built in Niagara in four decades has a
principal. On Tuesday, January 13, the District School Board of Niagara
announced Fred Louws has been appointed to the position.
Fred
Louws has deep roots in the community, having graduated from Ridgeway-Crystal
Beach High School (RCBHS), where he also served as Vice-Principal. He has also
taught at Fort Erie Secondary (FESS) and most recently, served as the school’s
principal.
Superintendent
of Education Helen McGregor noted that although much has been accomplished to
bring a new high school to Fort Erie, there is still a great deal of work yet
to be done. “There are many important milestones to reach before Greater Fort
Erie officially opens its doors in 2017, and it is important to have leadership
in place to guide the development of the school and program,” said McGregor.
“Fred
will do an excellent job working with the community and the staffs at FESS,
RCBHS and the elementary feeder schools to build school spirit and ensure a
positive transition for all students,” added McGregor.
Louws
said he’s honoured to be named the first principal of Greater Fort Erie
Secondary School. “This is an exciting time for students in Fort Erie. Having
all high school students in the Town under one roof will create many exciting
opportunities for students, academically, athletically and in the number of
extra-curriculars we are able to offer. I look forward to working with my
colleagues to build a collaborative school community focused on supporting
students,” said Louws.
The
school, which will combine the populations of FESS and RCBHS, will be
constructed across from the Municipal Centre on Garrison Road. Greater Fort
Erie Secondary is expected to open its doors to students in September, 2017.
