Special
Olympics a Special Day for Students
Uplifting.
Inspiring.
Empowering.
Those are
just a few of the words to describe the DSBN’s annual Special Olympics event. Held
each year in June, students come together to challenge themselves, meet new
friends and experience success in a number of athletic contests. This year’s
event will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2015.
“Every
student has their own unique gifts and talents,” said Andy Dermatas, Power Glen
Public School teacher who also serves on the Special Olympics organizing
committee. “The Special Olympics gives students an opportunity to put their
abilities on display in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.”
The event is
considered the highlight of the year for many students, even those not taking
part. Anna Belford, a Grade 8 student at Power Glen, has been volunteering at
the event for the past three years. “The smiles on the athletes’ faces are
priceless and a truly beautiful thing to see. I’m proud to call myself a
volunteer,” said Belford.
This celebration
of student success will take place at the Niagara Olympic Club behind the DSBN
Academy on Louth Street in St. Catharines between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Hundreds
of elementary and secondary students from public schools across Niagara will to
take part in different events including long jump, softball throw and team
relay races. Each student will be attempting to obtain a personal best.
