Education Week 2019 – Madison Edwards Feature
Meet Madison Edwards, her #DSBNEducationStory started in biology class.
She can remember the adrenaline and fascination she had during her dissection exam in Grade 11 biology. That adrenaline and fascination lives on in her today as she now studies on the human body.
Madison is currently studying abroad at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Basseterre, Saint Kitts to obtain her Doctor of Medicine Degree. Madison’s interest in the field started when she was first exposed to the subject at Steele Street Public School. This passion was then fostered during her time at Port Colborne High School.
“I have always dreamed of pursuing a career in science and medicine,” exclaimed Madison. “The DSBN helped foster that dream and I am now one step closer to making it a reality”.
Madison’s Grade 12 science teacher knew how much she loved science and wanted to see her passion grow in the field. He offered her the opportunity to participate in the Brock Mentorship Program. In her last year of high school, Madison was able to study mechanisms of cellular defense on the process of aging and disease at Brock University.
“This hands-on experience at such a young age ignited the love I have for science and medicine,” she remarked.
Since high school it has been Madison’s goal to be a part of a team of medical individuals that provide essential resources and skills to her hometown and the Niagara Region. The DSBN helped push Madison in the right direction to fulfill this dream.
“I feel extremely lucky to have been given a strong foundation of knowledge from Port Colborne High School, which has led me to succeed in my medical school endeavor,” said Madison.
After high school Madison attended Guelph University. She graduated in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences and a Minor in Nutrition and Nutraceutical Science. Following graduation, she was ready to take a leap of faith in her career. She accepted her offer to the University of Medicine and Health Sciences and moved to Saint Kitts in April 2018.
Congratulations on all your achievements Madison! We are proud to have been a part of your journey and we look forward to seeing what the future holds. You are a prime example of the #DSBNEducationStory we strive to grow in every student.
