The DSBN Hiring Process

  1. What are the typical steps in the recruitment process?

    a) Applying to Job Postings

    • Employment opportunities are posted on the DSBN website or ApplyToEducation.Some jobs are also posted on external recruitment sites such as Indeed.
    • Specific instructions for applying are outlined on each posting.
    • All applications are appreciated, however only those chosen for an interview will be contacted via email with details such as time, date and location of the interview.
    • Candidates are asked to reply to the email to confirm their attendance.

    b) Interview

    Virtual Interview

    • For interviews that are being conducted remotely, you will be provided a Microsoft Teams link. 
    • Please ensure you are able to access Microsoft Teams through video and audio and if not, contact the Staffing Advisor immediately.
    • A member of the interview team will greet you and introductions will be made
    • The interview panel will be happy to repeat questions or provide clarification, if requested.
    • At the conclusion of the interview, time will be given to answer any questions that candidates have regarding the position.
    • Candidates will then be informed of next steps and applicable timelines.

    In person Interview

    • Arrive early and sign in at the main reception.
    • The receptionist will direct you to a designated area to be seated.
    • A member of the interview team will greet you and accompany you to the meeting room.
    • Introductions will be made; however, handshaking is not necessary.
    • A written copy of the questions will be made available for your reference.
    • If applicable, provide one hard copy of any documentation that you were asked to bring to the interview.
    • At the conclusion of the interview, time will be given to answer any questions that candidates have regarding the position.
    • Candidates will then be informed of next steps and applicable timelines.           

    c) Interview Feedback

    • All candidates will be informed of the outcome of the interview by email.
    • Candidates not selected for the position can reply to that email to request feedback from the interview team.

    d) Offer of Employment

    • The successful applicant(s) will be contacted by a member of the hiring team.
    • An Offer of Employment letter, and additional documentation will be sent to the prospective employee(s).
    • Start date will be dependent on the provision of a satisfactory police check

    e) Police Check

    • The successful applicant will be informed which level of police check is required for their specific position.

    f) Online Health & Safety Training

    • Your offer letter will contain the list of online Health & Safety training that is required to be completed prior to being able to commence of your employment with the DSBN.
    • The online training will take approximately 3 hours to complete.
  2. How will I be contacted for an interview?
    • You will be contacted by e-mail confirming the date and time of the interview.
    • For interviews that are being conducted remotely, you will be provided a Microsoft Teams link.

  3. Can I request accommodations for the interview?
    • A candidate can request an accommodation prior to any component of the selection process.
    • Accommodation requests should be submitted in writing in a timely manner in order to allow for the recruitment team to make arrangements.
    • The recruitment team will do the best to accommodate your needs.
  4. What kind of accommodations can the DSBN offer?

    Accommodation is necessary to ensure that people with disabilities have equal opportunities, access and benefits. Examples of accommodations which can be provided during the recruitment process include:

    • use of alternative setting
    • provision of sign-interpreter
    • facilitation of alternate interview process (provide a copy of interview questions, extra time, use of notes in the interview that are collected afterwards, scribe or assistive technology, etc.)
    • preference of online interviews for all candidates
    • accessibility within the building (e.g. elevator, automatic door openers, washrooms etc.)
  5. What documentation should I bring?
    • When you are contacted for an interview, you will be advised of any documentation that will be required.
    • You may be asked to provide three (3) professional references
  6. How many people will be on the interview panel?
    • Typically interview panels consist of three to four DSBN representatives
  7. How will I be notified of the outcome of my interview?
    • The successful candidate will be contacted by phone or email, and upon acceptance of the position, will receive a follow-up e-mail containing the offer letter and all relevant new hire paperwork.
    • All other candidates will receive an e-mail advising they were not successful
