Secondary Schools
Secondary schooling in Ontario is comprised of Grades 9-12 and student ages are typically 14 – 17 years. The secondary school curriculum leads students to achieving the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) once they have completed all the requirements. Click here to see the OSSD requirements.
Each secondary school has a variety of curriculum and specialized facilities to provide courses at different levels in subject areas such as English, mathematics, the sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), technological studies, fine and performing arts, and physical and health education. In Grades 9 and 10 compulsory subjects are taken leading to the completion of the O.S.S.D. In Grades 11 and 12, courses are offered at 5 levels (University, University-College, College, Open and Workplace) to prepare students for different post-secondary destinations :university, college or the world of work.
All secondary schools offer ESL support; however, four (4) secondary schools in particular provide a comprehensive level of ESL support that meets the needs of international students. Students at the beginning to intermediate stages of learning English are strongly advised to attend one of these 4 schools.
